Episode 3208: The Construct of the Human Mind by Sharon
The Construct of the Human Mind
Welcome to today’s episode. I Sharon your host will dive into one of the most fascinating, yet often misunderstood, topics: the human mind its nature, its struggles, its divine orientation, and its ultimate purpose. Trust me, as a grown Woman I know what it means to control the mind and do battle with temptations on a daily basis. It is tough and it takes work and discipline.
But before we get started lets start with a prayer for proper guidance.
Opening Prayer
"Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created, and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Amen."
Modern psychology, neuroscience, and evolutionary theories often present the mind as merely a collection of chemical impulses, survival mechanisms, or computational functions. But the Catholic tradition sees something far greater.
From St. Augustine’s meditations, to the rigorous clarity of St. Thomas Aquinas, to the mystical insights of saints like St. Bonaventure and St. Teresa of Avila, the Catholic view is clear:
• The mind is spiritual.
• The mind is immortal.
• And above all, the mind is made in the image of God, ordered toward truth, goodness, and beauty.
The Catholic mind is never just about thinking, it is about knowing God, loving Him, and serving Him faithfully.
The Image of God in the Mind
St. Augustine, in De Trinitate, describes how the highest powers of the soul memory, understanding, and will mirror the Blessed Trinity.
• Memory: Our participation in eternity; the repository of truths and experiences that give continuity to our lives.
• Understanding (intellectus): The illumination of divine truth, the way our minds grasp reality and meaning.
• Will: The movement of love, directed toward the good, animated by charity.
Augustine teaches that the human mind is a mirror of the Divine Life. To lose sight of God is to distort that mirror.
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” (Confessions I, 1)
Thus, the mind is not simply a rational calculator it is a sanctuary, capable of reflecting the eternal Trinity.
Aquinas on the Powers of the Soul
St. Thomas Aquinas provides the most systematic explanation in the Summa Theologiae.
• The soul is the form of the body, giving it life.
• It expresses three levels of powers:
1. Vegetative – nutrition, growth.
2. Sensitive – senses, passions, imagination.
3. Rational – intellect and will.
Within the rational powers:
• The intellect is ordered toward truth. The human mind seeks to know reality as it is, not merely as we imagine it.
• The will is ordered toward the good. Once truth is perceived, the will should follow toward that good.
Aquinas explains that the mind is naturally oriented to first principles and ultimately toward God Himself, who is Truth and Goodness.
This is why relativism and modern skepticism so deeply wound the mind: they sever truth from reality, leaving the will enslaved to passions and desires.
The Mind Darkened by Sin
Sin doesn’t just harm the body or soul it directly impacts the mind.
• St. Paul warns: “Their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21)
• Catholic theology calls this the noetic effect of sin our ability to reason clearly is clouded.
Without grace:
• The intellect becomes confused.
• The will becomes weakened.
• Pride and error replace humility and truth.
St. Augustine described this vividly: the restless search for truth becomes a labyrinth of illusions without Christ.
This is why spiritual warfare often begins in the mind: deception, temptation, and half-truths that obscure reality.
Spiritual Warfare & Custody of the Mind
Christ as the first responder to the crisis in our mind.
To take custody of the mind means:
• Resisting lies with the truth of Scripture.
• Guarding imagination from demonic suggestion.
• Rebuking despair with divine hope.
St. Paul exhorts us: “Take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:5)
Practical tools:
• Prayer: The Rosary, the Divine Office, ejaculatory prayers.
• Scripture: Filling the mind with God’s Word, especially Psalms.
• Sacramentals: Holy water, crucifixes, the Sign of the Cross.
• Discernment: Recognizing which thoughts lead us toward or away from God.
Here the battlefield is clear: Satan assaults the mind with deception. But Christ rescues, heals, and fortifies it.
Grace and Healing of the Mind
Aquinas reminds us: “Grace does not destroy nature, but perfects it.”
• Philosophy can bring us to certain truths.
• But Revelation alone unveils mysteries: the Trinity, the Incarnation, salvation.
Grace restores clarity to the intellect and strengthens the will. This is why the saints Augustine, Bonaventure, Aquinas, Teresa all insisted that study must flow into contemplation and prayer.
Without grace, knowledge puffs up. With grace, knowledge becomes wisdom.
The Battle for the Mind Today
Modernity has not simply ignored the Catholic view of the mind it has actively undermined it.
• Psychology reduces the mind to instincts.
• Materialism denies its spiritual nature.
• AI and transhumanism seek to replicate or replace it.
The consequences?
• Human dignity eroded.
• Culture of death advanced: abortion, euthanasia, relativism.
• A society that cannot recognize the eternal destiny of man.
The Church reminds us that the battle for truth today is a battle for the mind.
Living with a Catholic Mind
To reclaim our minds, we must live with a distinctly Catholic approach.
1. Train the intellect: study Scripture, the Catechism, the Fathers.
2. Guard the imagination: avoid corrupt media; immerse in beauty.
3. Discipline the will: frequent Confession, pursuit of virtue.
4. Elevate to contemplation: Eucharistic adoration, mental prayer.
St. Paul exhorts: “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
And again: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:5).
Living with a Catholic mind means submitting every thought to Christ.
Conclusion
The construct of the human mind is not merely biological or functional it is the very reflection of God Himself.
• Created to know Him.
• Created to love Him.
• Created to serve Him.
When we discipline our minds, elevate them by grace, and orient them toward God, we fulfill the very purpose of our existence.
Christ enters the battlefield of our thoughts, rescues us, and empowers us to live with His mind.
Closing Prayer
"Eternal God, source of truth and light, renew our minds by Thy grace. Strengthen our wills, purify our hearts, and grant us wisdom that we may always seek Thee, know Thee, and love Thee, in this life and in the next. Through Christ our Lord. Amen."
