Octopus-inspired robot arm that lifts 260 times its weight
Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have developed SpiRobs, a spiral-shaped soft robot inspired by the arms of octopuses and trunks of elephants. Using a logarithmic spiral design, these robotic arms can curl around objects of all shapes and sizes. Controlled by just two or three cables, they can handle items ranging from millimeters to meters in scale, and lift up to 260 times their own weight. Built with 3D printing, SpiRobs are scalable and don’t require complex sensors or programming. Their spiral design automatically adapts to the size and shape of the object they grip. Potential applications include lab automation, drone retrieval, industrial handling, search and rescue, and even medical surgeries. Would you trust an octopus-inspired robot arm to handle delicate or heavy tasks?
