What is the Islamic View on Alliances with Disbelievers?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 28. and will be describe That What is the Islamic View on Alliances with Disbelievers?, So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Islam is a religion built upon justice, peace, and the protection of truth. The Qur’an and Sunnah provide guidance on how Muslims should interact with non-Muslims in social, political, and military matters. One important issue addressed in the Qur’an is the question of forming alliances with disbelievers. Islam encourages Muslims to live peacefully with non-Muslims who do not show hostility, but it also warns against alliances that compromise faith, dignity, or the unity of the Muslim community.

The Qur’an makes it clear that ultimate loyalty belongs to Allah, His Messenger (PBUH), and the believers. It says in Surah Aal-e-Imran, verse 28 that:

“Let not the believers take the disbelievers as allies (awliya) instead of the believers. And whoever does that will never be helped by Allah in any way, unless you protect yourselves against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself.”

This verse teaches that alliances which make Muslims dependent on disbelievers, or which harm the Muslim community, are forbidden. Loyalty (wala’) must remain with the believers, as it preserves Islamic identity and faith.

Islam does not prohibit all forms of cooperation with disbelievers. The Qur’an allows justice and kindness toward non-Muslims who are peaceful and do not fight Muslims: and Quran say in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, verse 8:

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes—from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”

This verse shows that alliances for trade, humanitarian work, and peaceful coexistence are allowed, as long as they do not compromise Islamic principles.

The Qur’an warns strongly in Surah Al-Ma’idah, verse 51 against aligning with disbelievers against Muslims, and say:

“O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you—then indeed, he is one of them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”

This verse addresses alliances in the sense of political or military dependence, where loyalty to Islam is compromised. The verse was revealed in the context of some hypocrites in Medina who sought protection from hostile tribes against Muslims. The lesson is that Muslims must not rely on alliances that weaken their unity or make them vulnerable to external domination.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) entered into treaties with disbelievers, such as the Quraysh, during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. This shows that political agreements with non-Muslims are permissible if they are based on justice and do not harm the interests of Islam. However, when Quraysh violated the treaty, the Prophet (PBUH) responded by declaring the treaty void, leading to the eventual Conquest of Makkah.

This example shows that Islam permits alliances for peace and stability, but betrayal or treachery nullifies such agreements.

Surah At-Tawbah exposes the hypocrites who sought alliances with enemies of Islam to protect themselves:

Quran said in Surah An-Nisa, verse 138–139 “Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment—those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek honor through them? But indeed, honor belongs entirely to Allah.”

This verse warns Muslims not to seek protection or honor by allying with disbelievers in a way that abandons their faith. True dignity comes from Allah, not from alliances with those opposed to Islam.

The Prophet (PBUH) said in Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith No 4998:

“The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe. And the believer is the one from whom people’s lives and wealth are safe.”

This hadith indicates that while Muslims should be trustworthy and just with all people, they must not form alliances that endanger the safety and honor of fellow Muslims.

Islam strikes a balance:

Cooperation with non-Muslims in good deeds is encouraged (Surah Al-Mumtahanah verse 8).
Alliances that strengthen justice and peace are permissible (example: Hudaybiyyah).
But alliances that compromise loyalty to Islam or harm the Muslim community are prohibited (Surah Aal-e-Imran verse 28, Surah Al-Ma’idah verse 51).

The Islamic view on alliances with disbelievers is balanced and rooted in justice. Muslims are forbidden from alliances that undermine their faith, weaken their unity, or empower enemies against them. However, cooperation for peace, trade, and justice is allowed and even encouraged. The Prophet (PBUH)’s treaties demonstrate that Islam permits agreements with non-Muslims when based on fairness, but treachery or betrayal nullifies them. Ultimately, the Qur’an reminds us in Surah An-Nisa verse 139. that true honor and protection come from Allah alone.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
