Can Giving Charity Be a Sign of Hypocrisy?
I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 23. and will be describe That whether giving charity can be a sign of hypocrisy., So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
In Islam, charity (sadaqah) is one of the most noble deeds, highly praised in the Quran and Sunnah. It purifies wealth, helps the needy, and strengthens faith. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a grain of corn which grows seven ears, in each ear a hundred grains, and Allah increases it for whom He wills."
However, Islam also warns that charity can lose its value — or even become a sin — if it is done for hypocrisy, show, or worldly praise. Thus, giving charity is not always a sign of goodness. Sometimes, if the intention is bad, it can also be a sign of hypocrisy.
Prophet (PBUH) Explained in Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1and Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1907 that :
"Actions are only by intentions, and every person will get what he intended."
The one who gives charity for the sake of Allah will receive a great reward, but the one who gives to show off is hypocritical. Such a person may be outwardly pious, but his intentions are bad inwardly. This is why charity can sometimes be a sign of hypocrisy.
The Quran condemns in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 264 giving charity for recognition or worldly gain, and said:
"O you who have believed, do not nullify your charity by admonition or harm, like the one who spends his wealth to be seen of people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day."
This verse shows that charity is meaningless without sincerity. A hypocrite may give, but his giving is poisoned with arrogance or selfishness. Such actions do not bring any reward and may even invite the wrath of Allah.
In verse No 36 of Surah Anfal, Allah Almighty exposes the hypocrites, and said:
"The hypocrites spend their wealth to hinder from the path of Allah, so they spend it, then it will be a cause of regret for them, then they will be overcome."
Here, financial support from the hypocrites is also rejected because their aim is to harm Islam, not to please Allah.
The Prophet (PBUH) warned about three types of people who, despite their outwardly good deeds, will suffer severe punishment on the Day of Resurrection. Among them is the one who gives charity only for the sake of praise:
Narrted in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1905
"The first of those against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who gave charity, and it will be said: What did you do?" He will say: I spent on everything you wanted me to spend on. It will be said: You lie, you did it so that it would be said. Then it will be said: I ordered him to be dragged on his face until he was thrown into Hell.
This Hadith clearly shows that giving charity without sincerity is a sign of hypocrisy. Outward generosity cannot save a person if the intention is corrupted by the desire for fame.
In Surah At-Tawbah verse 79, Allah Almighty exposed the hypocrites who ridiculed sincere believers for their charity:
"Those who criticize those who give charity among the believers - and [criticize] those who have nothing but their own efforts - then they mock them, Allah will mock them, and for them is a painful punishment."
Here the hypocrites themselves were giving charity or making comments, but there was apathy in their hearts. Instead of paying attention to Allah's bounty, they ridiculed others. Their hypocrisy rendered their charity useless.
True charity is given secretly, sincerely, and for Allah alone. The Prophet (PBUH) said about seven types of people:
"... a person who gives charity and hides it so that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1423; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1031)
This is in contrast to the hypocrite, who seeks recognition. The important lesson is that secrecy and sincerity protect charity from hypocrisy.
Giving charity is one of the greatest acts of worship, but if it is done with show, worldly praise, or ill intentions, it can also be a sign of hypocrisy. The Quran (2:264, 8:36, 9:79) and the Hadith (Muslim 1905, Bukhari 1423) make it clear that Allah only accepts charity. Therefore, a believer should purify his intention and seek only Allah’s pleasure, remembering that outward actions cannot deceive Allah. In fact, charity without sincerity is not generosity, but rather hypocrisy.
We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
