Hurtful FM Sitharaman's Biggest Retort on Navarro's "India Will Say Sorry" Remark
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered a powerful response to controversial remarks made by former US trade advisor Peter Navarro, who criticized India's purchase of Russian oil and suggested "Brahmins profiteering" from the trade. Sitharaman condemned Navarro's caste-laced narrative as a colonial-style attack, emphasizing that India has been free from imperialist influence for over 75 years and must think for itself. She rejected the defensive justifications some Indian voices gave to Navarro's comments, stressing the importance of self-respect and Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Sitharaman also reaffirmed India's sovereign right to make energy decisions based on national interests such as pricing and logistics, dismissing US pressure and tariffs aimed at curtailing Indian imports of Russian oil. Despite escalating diplomatic tensions, she made it clear that India will continue buying Russian oil "undoubtedly" to meet its energy needs.
This assertive rebuttal highlights the growing strains in India-US relations over trade and geopolitics amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Sitharaman's remarks call for Indian unity against external criticism and reinforce India's independent foreign and economic policies.
