The Surprising Resurgence of Peat Harvesting in Energy Politics

Europe is experiencing a surprising revival of peat harvesting despite previous environmental commitments to phase it out. Countries including Ireland, Finland, and Baltic states have increased peat extraction as an energy security measure following geopolitical tensions, particularly the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This trend presents a significant climate paradox, as peatlands store approximately 550 gigatons of carbon—twice the amount in all forests combined—despite covering only 3% of Earth's land surface. Peat releases substantial carbon dioxide and methane when harvested, with a single hectare of drained peatland emitting about 7.5 tons of CO2 equivalent annually. The resurgence highlights the tension between immediate energy security concerns and long-term climate goals, with some nations exploring compromise solutions like traditional harvesting methods or hybrid peat products while establishing sunset provisions for this temporary return to an ancient fuel source.
