Napoleon’s return from Elba turns France upside down, and Edmond Dantès remains trapped in his dungeon while the world changes above. Villefort, ever the opportunist, protects his career while deceiving shipowner Morrel, who pleads tirelessly for Edmond’s freedom. Morrel’s petitions never reach the ministers—Villefort locks them away for his own advantage. Meanwhile, Danglars flees to Madrid, Fernand joins Napoleon’s forces, and Mercédès clings to faith as despair threatens to consume her. Tragedy deepens when Edmond’s father, broken by grief, dies in Mercédès’ arms. Amid the rise and fall of thrones, Edmond is left forgotten—buried alive in prison.
