Who Are the Quick and the Dead?
Who are the Quick and the Dead?
2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
All who have died in the past fall under two categories; the quick and the dead. The minute you die Christ appears to you and opens the books and he judges you. At that moment it is determined whether you are alive in the spirit or you are dead in the spirit. The sheep, (believers) are put on the right side of the gulf and the goats on the left, who are non believers. You are either dead to the truth or you are alive to it.
You are either dead in Christ or you are dead to the truth. The dead in Christ are alive to the truth and the dead who haven’t accepted the plan of salvation are dead to the truth.
The dead in Christ have attained eternal life, while the dead to the truth have not. Although both have received the resurrection to the spirit body, the dead in Christ are immortal but the dead to the truth are still mortal.
This is the point of this lecture is to help you understand this terminology. All who have died in the past go to the same place whether believer or non believer. Luke 16 is our example.
Both the quick and the dead are judged at the GWTJ after the Millennium, one receives Eternal rewards and the other receives eternal death.
The dead to the truth will be judged on their performance of discipline and their response to the final release of satan to test their loyalty to YHVH once again. The Millennium is reserved for those mortal souls who have one final chance to attain eternal life. It will be a thousand years of discipline.
The Millennium is referred to in many ways such as; In That Day, or The Lords Day, The Second Coming, The Seventh Trump, The Last Trump and of course the Thousand Year Period.
All of these events above refer to a specific time at the seventh Trump when we are changed into a brand new celestial body and the beginning of a new age begins. The seventh Trump will end the previous age and sound the beginning of a new age called the Millennium.
2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
One day with the Lord is as a thousand years with man.
The deeper meaning is; the Lord is not bound by the constraints of time, He lives outside of time and space.
Here are the verses that mention the Millennium
Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
This sounds like much of the same as we have now? Why is satan being let loose again? Apparently not everybody in heaven is perfect? Why would they need to be tested?
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
The Millennium is a definite time period with a beginning and an end. There is a “passing of time”. The Seventh Trump will begin the countdown of a thousand year period. What will be accomplished during the Millennium?
Verse four speaks of those who rule and reign with Christ for a Thousand years. They are Priests who teach and discipline the spiritually dead. 1000 years of boot camp.
Revelation 20:1And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
The purpose of the Millennium is not spelled out for us. Also, the purpose for satan being released again at the end is not spelled out either. I believe this is the final chapter before the GWTJ and then the eternity begins. It is the last attempt to test those who failed in this age. This is why satan is released again. After a thousand years of discipline is administered by the Zadok the spiritually dead will be tested one last time before the GWTJ.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Verse five describes the spiritually dead mortal souls who will not have a chance to retain eternal life until the thousand years is over.

599 /apothnḗskō ("die off, from") occurs 111 times in the NT. It stresses the significance of the separation that always comes with divine closure. 599 (apothnḗskō) stresses the ending of what is "former" – to bring what (naturally) follows.
Verse 5 is where the controversy of the quick and the dead is found.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. (Referring to verse 6)
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
The verses above refer to those who are believers in Christ before they died in the flesh. They are part of the first resurrection. The second resurrection refers to those who turned toward God and rejected satan at the end of the Millennium.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Below is the technical data by Dr. E.W. Bulinger that explains the different types of bodies and the difference between them. There are 4 categories; first, there are live and dead flesh bodies and second, there are live and dead spiritual bodies.
nekros, hoi nekroi, ek nekron and 'ek ton nekron. The word nekros (Noun and Adjective) has different meanings, according as it is used in different connections:—
1. With the Article (hoi nekroi) it denotes dead bodies, or corpses or carcasses in the grave, apart from the personality they once had. This is the Old Testament idiom also. See Septuagint, Genesis 23:3, 4, 6, 8. Deuteronomy 18:11; 28:26. Jeremiah 7:33; 9:22; 19:7. Ezekiel 37:9. See notes on Matthew 22:31. 1Corinthians 15:35.
2. Without the Article (nekroi) it denotes the persons who were once alive, but who are now alive no longer: that is to say, dead persons as distinct from dead bodies. Compare Deuteronomy 14:1. Judges 4:22. Lamentations 3:6. And see notes on Matthew 22:32. Acts 26:23.1Corinthians 15:12, 12, 13, 15, 16. Hebrews 13:20, etc.
3. With a Preposition, but without the Article, which may be latent in the Preposition (ek nekron), it denotes out from among dead people. Reference Mark 9:9, 10. Luke 16:30, 31. John 20:9. Acts 10:41. Romans 6:13; 10:7, 9; 11:15. 1Corinthians 15:12-, 20. Hebrews 11:19.
4. With a Preposition, and with the Article; for example 'ek ton nekron, it denotes emphatically out from among the dead bodies, or corpses. Compare Ephesians 5:14. Colossians 1:18; 2:12.
5. The bearing of this on 1 Peter 4:6 will be better seen if we note that we have nekroi (See No. 2, above), meaning people who were then dead, but who had had the Gospel preached to them while they were alive; and this is confirmed by the Greek Particle, men(=although) in the next clause, which is ignored both by the Authorized Version and Revised Version. The verse reads thus: "For to this end to those who are (now) dead was the Gospel preached, that though they might be judged in the flesh, according to [the will of] men,¹ yet they might live [again, in resurrection], according to [the will of] God, as regards [the] spirit"; that is to say, in spiritual bodies, spoken of in 1Corinthians 15:44, 45. 2 Corinthians 5:10 JSOC

Strong’s Greek # 2266 “Death” deadly, death. From thnesko; (properly, an adjective used as a noun) death (literally or figuratively) -- X deadly, (be...) Death. thanatos: death Original Word: θάνατος, ου, ὁ Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine Transliteration: thanatos Phonetic Spelling: (than'-at-os) Definition: death, physical or spiritual.
Psalms 37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
The wicked will be gone just as the fat of a lamb in the fire they will be gone forever and ever never to be remembered again.
1 Corinthians 15:39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
Paul in the above verses is explaining the concept of all of the children of God having two bodies. We are born into this world with two bodies-one terrestrial and one Celestial. The terrestrial body cannot enter into heaven because it is the definition of corruption. The Celestial body is the definition of incorruption.
There are also two types of Celestial bodies during the millennial rein of Jesus Christ. One is immortal and the other is still mortal. The ones with immortal spiritual bodies have taken part in the first resurrection and the ones in mortal spiritual bodies will have to wait until the thousand year period is over. They will be tested when satan is released one more time after the millennium is over and if they follow him they will be sentenced to the death of their eternal soul. God will consume them in the lake of fire after the GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT.
1 Corinthians 15:15 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
Many will never die so to speak at the second coming of Jesus Christ because they will be changed instantly into their spiritual bodies.
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting?
