Tight vote in Norway to decide whether to stick with Labour or turn right

Norway is voting in a tight election that could keep Labour Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in power or return the centre right, led by Erna Solberg’s Conservatives and Sylvi Listhaug’s populist Progress Party.

While foreign policy issues like Gaza, Ukraine, and trade disputes have shaped the campaign, debate has shifted toward domestic concerns such as rising living costs, infrastructure, and taxes.

A key flashpoint is the 1% wealth tax, which Labour wants to review but keep, while the right pushes to cut or abolish it.

With no party able to rule alone, coalition building will be essential, and polls show Labour slightly ahead but facing strong challenges.

Norway’s EU ties remain contentious but largely absent from the campaign, as parties avoid reopening the divisive membership debate, the BBC has reported.

The outcome may hinge on whether the centre right can unite—and on which of its leaders would claim the prime minister’s office.
