Freestyle, commonly known as crawl, is the fastest and most popular stroke in competitive swimming. In this stroke, swimmers move face down in the water and perform alternating arm movements while their legs perform a wavy kicking motion. Breathing is done laterally, turning the head to the side to take a breath while performing the strokes.

It is highly effective at improving cardiovascular and pulmonary endurance due to its aerobic nature and the continuous movement of the arms and legs. It also strengthens the muscles of the shoulders, arms, and back, while improving motor coordination and body alignment in the water, making it an ideal option for swimming long distances in open water or in pools, and is therefore highly recommended. There are also other strokes, such as backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimming strokes offer a fascinating diversity that goes beyond simple locomotion in the water; they represent the synergy between technique, strength, and elegance.
