According to Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation, more than 138,000 soldiers have abandoned their units in 2025, including over 13,000 in August alone. Only about 28,000 have voluntarily returned, while desertion and unauthorized departures continue at a pace of 17,000–18,000 cases per month. Although Ukraine mobilizes roughly 20,000 conscripts monthly, the influx barely balances the scale of departures. Desertion remains a criminal offense under Ukrainian law, punishable by imprisonment, while temporary unauthorized absence carries fines. The crisis comes as Kyiv acknowledges Russia has deployed around 700,000 troops in Ukraine, including special forces and national guards, primarily in Donetsk. Despite fielding nearly 900,000 service members, Ukraine admits Moscow still holds numerical advantages in key sectors. Meanwhile, President Zelensky has urged Western allies to consider troop deployments, a move European leaders say will only follow the war’s end.
