The Squad 9.0 update is one of the game’s biggest leaps forward, bringing the long-awaited transition to Unreal Engine 5, which delivers improved visuals, lighting, and more detailed environments. The update features a complete revamp of the Al Basrah map, making it denser and more tactical, alongside a general visual overhaul across terrain and assets. To address performance issues, especially during aiming, the devs introduced an optional alternative to Picture-in-Picture scopes, giving players more flexibility depending on their hardware. Experimental improvements to server performance and motion systems were also added to reduce stuttering and freezes. Instead of frequent smaller patches, the team has shifted to releasing two major updates—9.0 and 10.0—with room for hotfixes in between, setting the stage for future features like the commendation system and new factions, including the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Overall, 9.0 focuses on modernizing Squad’s visuals and performance while laying groundwork for the next wave of content.
