Title: Revelation: Seven Bowls Plagues

Text: Revelation 16:13-21

Vital Verse: “Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, “It is done.” (Revelation 16:1).

Nugget to Nibble:
Chapter sixteen contains the final of the three series of judgments—seven bowls. Seals have been opened, trumpets were sounded, and now the bowls are poured upon a Christ-rejecting remnant that “deserve” their punishment (cf. Revelation 16:6). Ian Paul notes, “The first three bowl judgments appear to function on the Old Testament principle of lex talionis, that is, the penalty should fit the crime” (2018:267). In rapid succession, the bowls are unleashed—no interlude nor partial destruction as with the previous judgments. The bowls are given in a lethal injection manner with destruction.

In the Apostle Peter’s epistle, many issues related to the end times are highlighted. Explanations for human behavior and the necessity of vigilance for the redeemed receive clear messaging. Wicked individuals will mock God, following their own lust (2 Peter 3:3). Questions regarding the promise of Christ return— “Where is the promise of His coming?” (2 Peter 3:4) Peter notes their questioning reveal their ignorance of the Creator—God designed the earth, destroyed the inhabitants of the world with a universal flood, He is preserving the earth for a final destruction by fire (2 Peter 3:7). Unrighteous individuals do not comprehend the eternality of God who is not bound by time— “with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and thousand years like one day (2 Peter 3:8). Therefore, ungodly men are being kept for the day of judgment and destruction which will come according to the divine schedule of God (2 Peter 3:7). Destruction is not denied but delayed. Why? Because the Lord is “patient…not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
