A fictionalized historical adventure war film about one man’s experiences in serving with the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. An under rated film and well worth watching.

David Carr from Liverpool dies an elderly man of a heart attack. After his death, his daughter goes through his belongings and discovers secrets that he has kept for decades.

As a young man, Carr goes to Spain as a volunteer in the POUM (anarchist) International Brigade. The film starts with his decision to go and the adventures he has whilst in Spain. Eventually, disillusioned with communists as they attack the anarchists, he eventually flees Spain before Franco takes power. The film ends with his burial and touching scenes as his daughter throws some Spanish soil he has kept hidden in a small bag over the years into his grave.
