Monona, WI - Authorities in southern Wisconsin have issued an arrest warrant for a man who allegedly fled from a traffic stop and eluded police early Friday morning.

Shortly after midnight, a Monona police officer observed a vehicle weaving in its lane and traveling at inconsistent speeds on U.S. Highway 12. The officer initiated a stop, suspecting impaired driving.

Police say the driver, identified as 48-year-old Derrick Cole, showed signs of intoxication and attempted to conceal a liquor bottle while refusing to identify himself. When asked for his license, Cole allegedly put the car in drive and sped off while the officer was still at the driver’s door.

Officers pursued the vehicle as Cole exited onto Park Street, eventually abandoning the car in a Madison parking lot. He leapt from the vehicle without putting it in park, causing it to roll into a multi-unit apartment building. No injuries were reported, though the building was damaged.

Despite an extensive search, Cole escaped on foot. Officers later confirmed his identity with evidence found inside the vehicle and a jail photo comparison.

Police say they have probable cause to arrest Cole for felony eluding, operating after revocation, obstructing an officer, and several traffic violations. He also has an outstanding warrant for narcotics possession and four prior OWI convictions.
