Stephen M. Vantassel, host of the Wildlife Control Consultant podcast, explains how difficult it is to determine what caused a toxic exposure to a cat. He summarizes the article by Valentina Merola and Eric Dunayer entitled The 10 Most Common Toxicoses in Cats published in Veterinary Magazine in June 2006 pages 339-342. The article which lists the key poisoning causes encountered over 4 years of reports, shows that anticoagulant poisoning ranked at #9. Other causes included potpourri, lilies, acetaminophen, NSAIDS, amphetamines, and even antidepressants can be involved in cat poisoning events. Stephen explains that while today's top ten will likely be different, the key is not to assume that the rodenticide is cause of the cat's symptons.
