Punjab, India’s land of five rivers, faced its worst flood disaster since 1988. Relentless rains, swollen rivers, and emergency dam releases left at least 37 people dead and more than 350,000 affected. Over 1,200 villages and all 23 districts were hit, with thousands of homes submerged and 175,000 acres of farmland destroyed. Entire communities were displaced, livestock was washed away, and harvests were ruined. The army, National Disaster Response Force, and volunteers scrambled to rescue people and provide aid. As recovery began, experts said the deluge was not just nature’s fury but also a disaster worsened by human intervention and climate change.
