Colonization and the desire for ever more wealth left the working people in the home lands unsettled. While some benefited greatly from the infusion of treasure, the vast majority were deprived.
The British colonies in America were the sign that the old was about to be swept away. And, though the American Revolution was bloody, costing many lives and fortunes, worse was yet to come for mainland Europe.
