Welcome to Our Republic

Jefferson’s rough draft of the Declaration of Independence — aka, the version where Thomas Jefferson went full heavy-metal frontman, and then Congress came in with scissors and turned it into smooth jazz.

Everybody knows the Declaration we read every July 4th. “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Beautiful. Inspiring. Goosebumps stuff. But what most people don’t know is that Jefferson’s first draft was way spicier. It had lines so brutal they would’ve made King George spit out his tea — and Congress was like, “Uh, Tom, maybe tone it down a notch before we all get executed.”
