A quarter of a century ago I took a master’s degree in finance. I remember our highly regarded professor holding his last speech, obviously a well prepared speech that he has held many times as his conclusion. With sweat on his forehead he intensely declared how creating new derivatives on other derivatives would create an eternal spiral of ever growing wealth! At the time I was an undergraduate student, having learned from him how to evaluate derivatives on derivatives, so I basically believed what he said.

Although something in the back of my head told me that he is MAAAD! He was the victim of some defunct economist. A theory that is false.

I then got a "job" buying and selling electricity prices. Not electricity, we were just buying and selling the prices.
"- What is your job good for?"
"- Well, it's like an insurance. With a premium."
"- Did your insurances prevent electricity prices from rising, by a lot?"
"- No. Not much."
"- Hadn't it been more productive to study engineering to build more power plants?"
"- Shut up!"

I found the professor's presentation to have been an excellent summation of much of what I have learned in recent times. Prof. Michael Hudson has done a lot of work on this subject and has a robust body of work on economic history and how we got here. Great stuff!

The professor is absolutely spot on! In Chinese the character: money consists of 貨 is the physical goods and the medium of exchange is 幣. In the early pre Han period the bi or 幣was silk and other valuable stuff. The west has lots of paper currency or幣，but lack of 貨! Therein lies the root of discordant!
