Assalamu Alaikum, sisters, brothers, friends and elders, we welcome you to a series of videos on Muslim heritage and Islamic scholars. and today in this video we will describe biography Al-Shifa'a bint Abdullah

Al-Shifa’ bint Abdullah, whose given name was Layla, was among the noble women of early Islam and one of the honored female companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. She was born in the city of Mecca in the late sixth century, into the distinguished Qurayshi tribe of Adi. Her father was Abdullah ibn Abd Shams and her mother was Fatimah bint Wahb. She belonged to a respected family with ties to the Quraysh, and she grew up in a society where tribal lineage and noble character were highly regarded. From her youth, she was known for her intelligence, wisdom, and ability to read and write, which was a rare skill among both men and women of her time. This literacy later became one of her most important qualities, allowing her to serve the community in unique and valuable ways.

Al-Shifa’ embraced Islam in its earliest days in Mecca, making her among the first women to accept the message of the Prophet Muhammad. Her faith was strong, and she endured the hardships and struggles faced by the early Muslims during the years of persecution. Later, when the Prophet and his followers migrated to Medina, she too became part of the Muslim community there, continuing her service to Islam. In Medina, she grew close to the Prophet Muhammad, who respected her wisdom and knowledge. She was often consulted in matters of teaching and guidance. It is reported that the Prophet instructed her to teach Hafsah bint Umar, the wife of the Prophet, how to read and write, which highlights her role as one of the first female teachers in Islam.

Her marriage was to Abu Hatimah ibn Hudhayfah, a man from her own tribe. They had two sons together, Sulayman and Masruq. Through her family ties, as well as her personal qualities, Al-Shifa’ became known as a woman of influence and respect in both Meccan and Medinan society. Her sons grew up in the environment of the Prophet’s companions, benefiting from their mother’s closeness to the early Muslim leadership and her dedication to knowledge and faith.

Al-Shifa’ bint Abdullah was not only a teacher of literacy but also possessed skills in healing practices. She was knowledgeable in certain treatments, including traditional remedies and natural cures. The Prophet himself approved of her skills and allowed her to practice them in the community. This made her one of the earliest Muslim women engaged in medical practice, and she is often remembered as a pioneer of healthcare and education among Muslim women. Her dual role as a healer and teacher made her an invaluable member of the Prophet’s circle.

Her wisdom was also recognized by Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, who greatly respected her. During his caliphate, he is said to have consulted her in various matters and gave her a special position among the women of Medina. Some reports mention that she was even entrusted with responsibilities in the marketplace, reflecting her organizational ability and honesty. Such recognition demonstrates the high status she held among both men and women of her generation.

Al-Shifa’ bint Abdullah lived a long and respected life, continuing to serve the Muslim community through teaching, healing, and offering guidance. She died in Medina, though the exact date of her death is not precisely recorded by historians. Her resting place is within the sacred city of Medina, near the graves of many companions of the Prophet. Her shrine and burial site, though not marked in the same way as others, is remembered as part of the blessed ground where many companions rest. Over time, Muslims have continued to honor her memory as a woman of knowledge, faith, and service.

The legacy of Al-Shifa’ bint Abdullah stands as an inspiration for Muslim women and men alike. She was among the first female teachers, one of the earliest Muslim healers, and a woman of trusted advice to both the Prophet Muhammad and the caliphs who followed. Her story reminds us of the important role women played in building the Islamic community, not only through family and worship but also through education, healthcare, and leadership.
