Al-Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf Ibn Matar was a prominent Muslim mathematician and translator who played a central role in bringing Greek mathematics to the Arabic-speaking world. He lived in the 9th century CE during the Abbasid Caliphate, a period often referred to as the Golden Age of Islamic scholarship. Although the exact date of his birth is unknown, historians agree that he was active during the reigns of Caliph Al-Mansur (754–775 CE) and Caliph Al-Ma'mun (813–833 CE). He was probably born in the eastern provinces of the Abbasid Empire, but it was in Baghdad, the intellectual center of the Islamic world, where he spent the greater part of his life and gained recognition for his scholarly achievements.

Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ibn Matar's greatest contribution was his leading role in the translation movement that flourished in Baghdad, especially under the patronage of the Caliph al-Mu'minin, who established the Bayt al-Hikmah (House of Wisdom).This institution brought together scholars of diverse, class, and Indian and non-Indian backgrounds. Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ibn Matar's scholarly output was not limited to translations. He also wrote original treatises in mathematics, focusing on geometry and number theory, although many of these works have not survived. His intellectual reputation rests on his ability to combine precision with clarity, which enabled later mathematicians and astronomers to advance their fields. By making Greek mathematics accessible, he laid the foundation for the Islamic mathematical innovations that would later influence the European Scientific Revolution.

The exact date of al-Hajjaj's death is uncertain, but scholars generally place it in the early 9th century CE, probably in Baghdad, where he spent his productive years. His burial place is not clearly recorded in historical sources, unlike that of Sufi saints or jurists whose shrines became famous pilgrimage sites. However, tradition among some historians suggests that he was buried in Baghdad, near the scholarly circles and libraries where he spent his life. Unlike the grandiose shrines built for Sufis and rulers, al-Hajjaj's resting place was not transformed into a large religious shrine. Instead, his true legacy became the intellectual monuments he left behind—his translations and mathematical writings.

In terms of the history of the shrine, Baghdad itself was filled with the tombs of great scholars, many of which became places of pilgrimage. Although al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ibn Matar never had his own shrine, his memory lives on in the House of Wisdom and in the manuscripts he translated. Today, historians of science see these translations as a form of intellectual shrine - enduring monuments that have preserved ancient knowledge through centuries of cultural change. His role as the first translator of Euclid's Elements into Arabic makes him one of the most important figures in the world history of mathematics.
