Mali has filed a case against Algeria at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Algiers of deliberately shooting down one of its military drones, which was operating in Malian airspace. The incident, which occurred near the Mali-Algeria border in April, has led to a diplomatic crisis, with both countries banning flights and recalling ambassadors. Mali's allies, Burkina Faso and Niger, have also sided with Bamako, recalling their own envoys from Algiers. While Algeria has denied the accusations, the diplomatic rift has been growing since Mali’s military government, along with Burkina Faso and Niger, cut ties with former coloniser France and moved closer to Russia. Mali’s decision to scrap a 2015 peace deal with separatist groups, which was brokered by Algeria, has further exacerbated the strained relationship.
