According to reports, the US and Taiwan held "secret" talks in Alaska, days before China flexed its military muscle in a massive "Victory Day" parade. The meeting in Anchorage was reportedly attended by the Pentagon’s top Indo-Pacific official and Taiwan’s then-deputy national security adviser. The lower-level meeting came after Washington cancelled talks with the Taiwanese defence minister in June, attributing the last-minute change to its airstrikes on Iran. However, reports suggested that some US officials had opposed the Taiwanese defence minister’s visit, arguing that it could impact the prospect of a future summit between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The US is reportedly averting moves that could derail trade talks with China.
