Just days after India announced cuts in GST rates, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined how she drew up a plan to revamp the tax structure. Speaking to Network18's Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi in an exclusive interview, she said, “Every item which comes under the GST, goods or services, had to be looked at, not just by their codes or their names, but to regroup from the point of view of daily used items consumed by citizens, the middle class, the poor in particular, and then you're going to look at those which are going to hit the farmers, the middle class and so on." Sitharaman explained that while the GST introduced in 2017 was an improvement over the earlier system, it still needed further simplification. She also touched upon the long-standing debate on how popcorn should be taxed under GST.
