Hineshaw School

Step back into the history of Liberty County, Georgia, with a closer look at Hineshaw School in Hinesville. Once a cornerstone of local education, Hineshaw represents more than just bricks and mortar—it stands as a reminder of how communities came together to provide learning opportunities for generations of students.

Hineshaw School in Hinesville, Georgia—the last remaining Rosenwald School in Liberty County. Built in 1930–31 through a partnership of the Rosenwald Fund, the African American community, and public funds, Hineshaw stood as a beacon of education during segregation.

Community leaders purchased and donated land, families raised money, and together they built a school that served generations of students with pride and resilience. For decades, Hineshaw educated Black children in grades 1 through 7, becoming a cornerstone of learning, unity, and cultural identity.

Though the school closed in the 1990s, its legacy endures. Today, preservation advocates envision restoring Hineshaw as a community center and museum—keeping alive the story of determination and hope.
