Why is Spending in Allah’s Cause Praised in Quran?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 22. and will be describe That why the Quran praises spending in the way of Allah., So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

The Quran repeatedly highlights the virtue of spending in the way of Allah, but Surah At-Tawbah particularly emphasizes it. This Surah was revealed during a time of trials for the Muslim Ummah - especially around the Battle of Tabuk, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called upon the believers to contribute their wealth and strength to the defense of Islam. It was a time of hardship, hardship and intimidation, and thus tested the sincerity of the believers. Those who sacrificed their wealth in the way of Allah were praised, while the hypocrites who withheld were condemned.

In Surah At-Tawbah in verse 44, Allah distinguishes between sincere believers and hypocrites on the basis of their willingness to spend. He says:

The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and when they are with him for a common task, they do not leave until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for a task of theirs, give permission to whomever they wish. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

True faith is proven when a believer sacrifices his wealth and his life for the sake of Allah. However, the hypocrites withhold their wealth by making excuses. This shows that spending in the way of Allah is not only from wealth but also from sincerity of heart.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"Charity is a proof (of faith)."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223)

Thus, giving in the way of Allah shows true faith.

Allah commanded in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 103 the Prophet (PBUH) Collecting charity from the believers for purification:

Take charity from their wealth by which you purify them and increase them, and send blessings upon them. Indeed, your supplication is a comfort to them, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse shows that spending in the way of Allah purifies wealth from greed, selfishness, and forbidden elements, as well as purifies the soul from attachment to material things. It makes wealth a source of blessing.

He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) explained this purification in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2588 by saying:

"Wealth never decreases through charity, but rather increases, increases, increases."

Thus, spending for the sake of Allah brings blessings in both this world and the Hereafter.

Surah At-Tawbah was revealed during the preparation for the Battle of Tabuk, where the Muslims were facing a powerful Roman threat. Financial aid was urgently needed. Some of the Companions, such as Uthman ibn Affan (RA), gave a great deal of wealth, while others gave very little of what they had. Allah Almighty praises in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 79 those who contribute sincerely, even if their wealth is small.

"Those who criticize the believers in their charity - and [criticize] those who have nothing but their own efforts - then they mock them, Allah mocks them, and for them is a painful punishment."

This verse shows that Allah values ??even the smallest donation, as long as it is sincere. Supporting the cause of Allah, whether through defense, education, or financial support for the spread of Islam, is an honorable deed.

One of the main themes of Surah At-Tawbah verse 75-76 is exposing hypocrisy. The hypocrites refused to spend in the way of Allah, using poverty as an excuse or accusing others of showing off. Allah Almighty condemned them, saying:

"And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, saying, 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely give charity and we will surely be among the righteous,' but when He gave them of His bounty, So they withheld it and turned away and refused.

This teaches us that withholding wealth when Allah has bestowed a blessing on someone is a sign of hypocrisy, while generosity is a sign of true faith.

Spending in the way of Allah brings His mercy and eternal reward. Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 111:

"Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the way of Allah, then kill and are killed. His promise is true in the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran. And who is more true to His covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your bargain that you have made a great deal."

Here, spending is seen as part of a contract between Allah and the believer - where the small, temporary wealth of this world is exchanged for an eternal Paradise.

Surah At-Tawbah praises spending in the way of Allah because it demonstrates the sincerity of faith, purifies wealth and life, supports the struggle for Islam, exposes hypocrisy, and earns Allah's eternal pleasure. The events of Tabuk shed light on who is truly a believer. and who merely claimed faith. Through zakah, charity, and contributions for the sake of Islam, a believer proves loyalty to Allah and invests in the ultimate reward — Paradise. Thus, Surah At-Tawbah teaches that spending in Allah’s cause is not just an act of generosity but an essential mark of true faith and submission.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
