That Who Has the Right to Maintain the Mosques of Allah?
I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 20. and will be describe That Who Has the Right to Maintain the Mosques of Allah?, So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
Mosques are the houses of Allah on earth. They are the centers of worship, learning, and unity for the Muslim community. The Qur’an and Sunnah emphasize not only the importance of building mosques but also the responsibility of maintaining them. However, not everyone has the right to maintain the mosques of Allah; this honor is reserved for those who truly believe in Him and uphold the principles of Islam.
Allah makes it clear in the Qur’an that maintaining His mosques is not a worldly responsibility for anyone, but a spiritual duty entrusted to the true believers. He says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 18:
“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakah, and fear none but Allah. It is they who are expected to be rightly guided.”
This verse outlines the qualifications of those who have the right to maintain the mosques:
1. Belief in Allah and the Last Day
2. Establishment of prayer (salah)
3. Payment of zakah
4. Fear of Allah alone
Thus, mosque maintenance is not simply about cleaning or repairing its structure, but about ensuring that it fulfills its role as a center of worship, guidance, and righteousness.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of mosques and the reward of those who build or maintain them. He said:
“Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 450; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 533)
This Hadith shows that building and maintaining a mosque with sincere intention is an act of great virtue. However, sincerity is the key. If someone builds or maintains a mosque for fame or prestige, it loses its value in the sight of Allah.
In another narration (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 757):
“Cleaning the mosque is a good deed.”
This indicates that even simple acts such as sweeping, removing dirt, or ensuring the mosque’s purity are considered acts of worship when done sincerely for Allah.
The Qur’an warns us through the story of **Masjid al-Dirar** (the Mosque of Harm), which was built by hypocrites with the intention of dividing the believers and spreading corruption. Allah revealed (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 107):
“And [there are] those who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers... And they will surely swear, ‘We intended only the best.’ And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.”
The Prophet (PBUH), upon Allah’s command, ordered Masjid al-Dirar to be demolished (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 453). This incident teaches that not everyone has the right to establish or maintain a mosque — especially those whose intentions are based on hypocrisy, division, or harm to the Muslim community.
From the Qur’an and Sunnah, the people who have the right to maintain mosques can be identified by the following signs:
Firm faith in Allah and the Hereafter
Regular observance of prayer
Payment of zak?h and charity
Fear of Allah rather than worldly power
Sincerity in intention
Commitment to unity, not division
Dedication to cleanliness and upkeep of the mosque**
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The most beloved places to Allah are the mosques, and the most hated places to Allah are the markets.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 671)
This shows that mosques must remain pure centers of worship and not be turned into places of dispute, politics, or worldly pride.
Practically, maintaining mosques involves more than just physical upkeep. It includes:
Preserving the sanctity of the mosque by ensuring it is used only for worship and beneficial activities.
Supporting religious education, Qur’an recitation, and gatherings of knowledge.
Encouraging the community to attend prayers and remain united.
Serving the poor and needy through mosque-led charitable initiatives.
This reflects the model of the Prophet’s (PBUH) mosque in Madinah, which was the center of worship, learning, social support, and community leadership.
The right to maintain the mosques of Allah belongs to those who truly believe in Him, establish prayer, give zakah, and fear Allah sincerely, as mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah (9:18). The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized that even small acts like cleaning the mosque are virtuous when done sincerely. On the other hand, hypocrites or those with corrupt intentions, like the builders of Masjid al-Dirar, have no right to maintain mosques. A righteous mosque must be preserved as a house of Allah, a beacon of unity, and a center of worship and guidance for the community.
We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
