I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 17. and will be describe That Why Was Masjid al-Dirar Destroyed by the Prophet (PBUH), So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

One of the most remarkable incidents in the history of Islam is the destruction of Masjid al-Dirar during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This mosque was not an ordinary place of worship but rather a center for hypocrisy, conspiracy, and harm against the Muslim community. The Qur’an itself directly mentions this mosque and explains why it was demolished, making it a unique case in Islamic history where a place built in the name of worship was ordered to be destroyed.

After the Hijrah of the Prophet (PBUH) to Madinah, Islam gained strength and many tribes entered the fold of Islam. However, there remained groups of hypocrites (munafiqoon) who outwardly professed Islam but inwardly plotted against it. Among them was Abu ‘Amir al-Rahib, a Christian monk who opposed Islam and fought against the Prophet (PBUH) during the Battle of Uhud. When he was expelled from Madinah, he sought the support of the Byzantine (Roman) Empire to attack the Muslims. Before his departure, he instructed his followers to build a mosque that would serve as a center of conspiracy under the guise of worship.

Thus, a group of hypocrites led by Abu ‘Amir’s supporters constructed Masjid al-Dirar close to Masjid Quba, the first mosque built in Islam. Their intention was not prayer or worship of Allah, but rather to create division among the believers, provide a base for the enemies of Islam, and to deceive the weak-hearted Muslims.

The matter of Masjid al-Dirar is mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah At-Tawbah verse 107:

“And [there are] those who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, ‘We intended only the best.’ And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.”

And in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 108
“Do not stand [for prayer] within it – ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.”

These verses made it clear that the so-called mosque was built for harm, disbelief, and division — not for the worship of Allah. Allah directly forbade the Prophet (PBUH) from praying there and commanded its rejection.

When the hypocrites invited the Prophet (PBUH) to inaugurate Masjid al-Dirar before the Battle of Tabuk, he postponed the matter until his return. Upon returning, Allah revealed these verses exposing their true intentions. Following this, the Prophet (PBUH) sent companions such as Maalik ibn al-Dukhshum and others to demolish and burn the mosque (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 453). The structure was destroyed, leaving behind only ashes and ruins, which stood as a reminder of hypocrisy and betrayal.

1. Purity of Worship Matters More than Structure
A mosque is not sacred merely because it is a building labeled as such. Its foundation must be based on sincerity (ikhlas) and righteousness. Allah praised Masjid Quba in Surah At-Tawbah (9:108) as an example of a mosque built upon piety from the very first day.

2. Preventing Division in the Ummah
Islam strongly condemns any attempt to divide the believers. Masjid al-Dirar was destroyed because it sought to break Muslim unity, showing that unity upon truth is greater than physical structures.

3. Hypocrisy in Religion is Dangerous
The hypocrites attempted to use the appearance of religiosity (building a mosque) to hide their real motives. This event teaches that Allah exposes hidden intentions and protects the Muslim community from internal threats.

4. Prophetic Leadership
The Prophet (PBUH) demonstrated wisdom and firmness. He did not allow a false symbol of worship to stand, because it would mislead people. This shows the responsibility of leaders to safeguard the faith of their people.

Masjid al-Dirar was destroyed because it was never truly a mosque built for Allah’s worship. Rather, it was a place established to spread disbelief, division, and conspiracy against Islam. The Qur’an exposed its reality in Surah At-Tawbah (9:107–110), and the Prophet (PBUH) acted upon Allah’s command by demolishing it. This incident is a timeless reminder that Islam values sincerity of worship and unity of believers over physical appearances. Any institution built upon corruption and harm, even if disguised as religious, has no place in Islam.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
