I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 15. and will be describe That How does Islam view cowards in war?, So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Islam has set a comprehensive framework of courage, sacrifice, and sincerity when fighting in the way of Allah, and within this framework, cowardice in war is seen as a dangerous weakness that contradicts true faith. The Quran repeatedly praises those who remain steadfast in times of difficulty and condemns those who flee or avoid war out of fear of worldly harm. Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Anfal verse 15-16: “O you who believe, when you meet the disbelievers [for battle], do not turn your backs on them. And whoever turns his back on them on that day, except as a strategy of war or to join another party, then he has indeed turned back in wrath, and Allah is his refuge.”. This powerful verse shows that cowardice, in the form of fleeing from the battlefield without a valid reason, is a major sin that incurs Allah’s wrath and punishment in the Hereafter. Islam does not tolerate decadence because it not only reflects weak faith but also endangers the entire Muslim Ummah.

Surah At-Tawbah also exposes the hypocrisy of those who use cowardice as an excuse to avoid jihad. Allah Almighty says: *“Those who were content to remain in their homes after the departure of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and disliked striving in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives, said: ‘Do not go out in the heat. Say: The fire of Hell is fiercer in the heat’ (if they could but understand). Here the Quran condemns those who avoided fighting out of fear of hardship. Their cowardice was not due to incompetence but rather to love of ease and fear of sacrifice. The Quran further describes them as hypocrites who preferred worldly ease to the eternal reward of the Hereafter, thus revealing the spiritual danger of cowardice – it weakens the ranks of Muslims and shows a lack of confidence in the promise of Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described bravery and steadfastness as essential qualities of believers. He warned against cowardice, saying in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6058: "The worst person in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be the one with two faces, who comes to some people with one face and to others with another." . Although this hadith speaks largely of hypocrisy, cowardice is one of its practical manifestations in war, when a person pretends to be loyal but abandons his companions when danger strikes. Another narration states that he sought refuge in Allah from cowardice, saying in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2823 "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from stinginess and cowardice." . This shows that cowardice is not merely a weakness of the body, but a disease of the heart, and believers are advised to pray for courage.

In addition, Islam distinguishes between cowardice and strategic withdrawal. In Surah Anfal verse 16, Allah makes an exception for those who retreat as part of military strategy or to regroup with fellow Muslims: "...unless it is a strategy of war or [another] company". This shows that Islam recognizes wisdom and planning in war. What is condemned is not retreating for tactical reasons, but fleeing from fear and abandoning the duty of fighting in the way of Allah. The Prophet? He himself was known for his unparalleled bravery and the Companions followed him. Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: *Whenever the battle was fierce, we would protect the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), because he was the closest of us to the enemy. This shows how courage rooted in faith was considered a sign of true leadership.

Furthermore, cowardice in war is related to hypocrisy in faith. Allah Almighty says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 47: "If they had gone out with you, they would have increased nothing among you except suspicion, and would have sought mischief among you, and among you there are some who listen to them, and Allah knows the wrongdoers best." . This means that sometimes Allah prevents the hypocrites from joining battles because their cowardice and distraction harm the believers. Thus, cowardice is not just a personal flaw but a danger to the entire Muslim army.

Islam views cowardice in battle as a grave sin when it stems from fear of worldly harm, laziness, or love of comfort. The Qur’an makes it clear in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 15–16 that fleeing from the battlefield without reason is a major sin leading to Hellfire . The Prophet (PBUH) warned in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2823 against cowardice and sought refuge in Allah from it , teaching that courage is part of faith. However, Islam also recognizes legitimate reasons for retreat, such as strategy or regrouping. Ultimately, cowardice reflects weak faith and hypocrisy, while bravery reflects sincerity and trust in Allah. True believers, therefore, are called to stand firm, for as Allah says in Surah As-Saff, verse 4: “Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly”.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
