The golden langur (Trachypithecus geei), also known as Gee's golden langur, is a rare and endangered colobine monkey discovered relatively recently in the late 1950s.

It's named after British naturalist E.P. Gee, who first documented it.

This primate is endemic to a small region along the Indo-Bhutan border and is listed among the world's 25 most endangered primates.

Physical Description
Golden langurs are medium-sized monkeys, weighing 5–7 kg (11–15 lbs) for females and up to 10–12 kg (22–26 lbs) for males, with a body length of 50–75 cm (20–30 inches) excluding the tail, which adds another 70–100 cm (28–39 inches).

They have striking golden-cream to bright orange fur on their bodies, contrasting with black faces, hands, feet, and tails.

Their long, fluffy manes give them a lion-like appearance, and they possess a distinctive crest of hair on the head.

Unlike many primates, they lack cheek pouches but have multi-chambered stomachs adapted for digesting leaves.

Habitat and Distribution
These langurs inhabit a narrow range of about 3,000 square kilometers in subtropical moist deciduous, evergreen, riverine, and sal forests, as well as some temperate broadleaf and subalpine areas at elevations from 100 to 3,000 meters (330–9,840 feet).

Their distribution is confined to the forests between the Manas, Sankosh, and Brahmaputra rivers in Assam, India, and adjoining areas in Bhutan, bounded by the Himalayan foothills to the north.

Key protected areas include India's Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary (their only dedicated sanctuary in India) and Bhutan's Royal Manas National Park.

Habitat fragmentation from logging, agriculture, and infrastructure has severely limited their range.

Behavior and Diet
Golden langurs are arboreal and diurnal, spending most of their time in the forest canopy.

They live in troops of 4–22 individuals, typically with one dominant male, multiple females, and offspring, though all-male groups also occur.

Known for their shyness, they actively avoid human contact, fleeing at the slightest disturbance, which makes them difficult to study in the wild.

Their diet is primarily folivorous (leaf-eating), supplemented by fruits, seeds, flowers, and occasionally bark or insects, with a preference for young leaves and shoots.

They communicate through vocalizations like whoops and grunts, and exhibit territorial behaviors such as branch-shaking displays.

Breeding occurs year-round, with females giving birth to a single infant after a 165–170 day gestation.

Conservation Status
Classified as Endangered by the IUCN, the global population is estimated at 4,000–6,000 individuals, with about 1,000 in Bhutan and the rest in India.

Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation (e.g., 20% lost in some areas between 1988–1998), fragmentation, poaching, electrocution on power lines, and attacks by feral dogs.

In Bhutan, they're considered sacred, which aids conservation, and a 10-year action plan was launched in 2025 to protect them through habitat restoration and community involvement.

Efforts in India focus on Chakrashila, where surveys have counted around 474 individuals in 64 troops.

Climate change and human encroachment could exacerbate declines, with models predicting further habitat loss.
