Facing Death with Stoic Clarity | In the Fog of Loss

"This Dispatch is different. Just you and I talking."

Death has touched many in this Forge - family, friends, brothers. In the aftermath, there are no words that erase the pain. Platitudes like “sorry for your loss” or “they’re in a better place” fall short.

This episode shares a personal reflection on death, grief, and how to honor those we’ve lost. I tell the story of Bill, a farm boy from Wisconsin who lost his father at twelve, carried the weight of his family, served his country, and built a billion-dollar company without self-promotion. More than his accomplishments, Bill embodied a Stoic code: integrity, honesty, charity, and love for those around him.

At his funeral, the church overflowed, not because of his words, but because of his example.

Marcus Aurelius wrote: “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” Bill was.

If you’ve lost someone you love, honor them, not with empty phrases, but by carrying forward what was best in them. This is the way.

With honor and respect, I stand with you, even in the fog of death.

Strength & Honor… hold the line.
