French Valley, CA - A man who allegedly shot and wounded his wife, briefly holding her and their child hostage in their French Valley home Monday, also exchanged gunfire with sheriff’s deputies, ultimately killing himself to bring an end to the standoff.

The domestic altercation was reported shortly before 3 a.m. Monday at a residence in the 35500 block of Shadow Drive, near Skyview Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Wenndy Brito Gonzalez said that deputies were sent to the location to investigate reports that the suspect, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was “inside the residence, assaulting the female and preventing her from leaving with her child.”

“Deputies … began making announcements, instructing the occupants to exit,” Gonzalez said. “While doing so, they were shot at from a second-floor window, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting. Minutes later, the female, with visible injuries, exited the home.”

The woman, also not identified, was holding the child, who wasn’t hurt, informing deputies that “her husband had shot her and then shot himself,” the sergeant said.

The victim was taken to a regional trauma center in critical but stable condition, Gonzalez said.

SWAT personnel soon after entered the property and discovered the suspect dead, she said.

Possible reasons for his alleged actions were not disclosed.
