The Atari 2600 was the console that created the home video game market. Its pitiful legacy is defined by its spectacular crash.
While revolutionary for using interchangeable cartridges, its hardware was severely limited, leading to crude, simplistic games. This weakness was fatally exposed by market saturation and an avalanche of terrible, rushed titles, most infamously the unwatchable E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

The resulting Great Video Game Crash of 1983 destroyed consumer trust so completely that the entire North American video game industry collapsed, nearly ending home consoles forever. It was a monumental fall from grace for a once-dominant system.
