Johnson says shutdown ball is in Democrats ‘corner’

Speaker Mike Johnson signaled that it will be up to Democrats to prevent a government shutdown on October 1, emphasizing that Republicans are moving forward on appropriations.

While GOP leaders consider a short-term stopgap to shift responsibility to Democrats, rank-and-file Republicans are frustrated by the lack of a long-term plan.

Johnson rejected rolling back health care spending cuts to gain Democratic support, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries reaffirmed that Democrats will not back partisan funding legislation, Politico has reported.
