Constant Mutamba, who previously served as the justice minister in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been sentenced to three years of hard labour for embezzling nearly $20 million in public funds. The court found him guilty of misappropriating money intended for a prison construction project, which prosecutors said had been sourced from a fund for Congolese victims of fighting between the Rwandan and Ugandan armies in 2000 during the Second Congo War. The court has ordered Mutamba to repay the embezzled funds and barred him from running for election for five years after his sentence is served. Mutamba, who has denied the charges and called himself a victim of a political plot, had previously advocated for death penalty for corrupt politicians.
