20 Medicinal Herbs to Grow & Use - Part 3: Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
You probably know of Chamomile, Matricaria Recutita, as a wonderful sleep aid, but it's uses are so much more than just that!
Chamomile is a relaxing nervine herb and it's also a mild sedative. It's a wonderful anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and great for arthritis! German Chamomile's essential oil is wonderful for aches and pains. The chemicals Chamazulene and β-caryophyllene it contains are very anti-inflammatory.
Chamomile is wonderful as a digestive aid, in a tea, or just eat the flowers! Babies with colic would do well with a bit of chamomile, even if the mother drinks some if she's breastfeeding!
Chamomile is wonderful in natural skin care and anti-itch products. Here's a link to my anti-itch salve recipe!
For soothing conjunctivitis, or crusty eyes, Chamomile would make a very nice eye wash.
With a hot fever, (Contrary to feeling chilly when you have a high temperature) chamomile is wonderful as it tends to be cooling.
Growing tips for Chamomile: Prefers a cooler climate, ready to harvest in 10-12 weeks, reseeds very easily, likes well-drained, neutral soil and 4-6 hours of sunshine.
