Fort Pierce, FL - Police have released the bodycam video after Saturday night's machete attack at the Walmart on Okeechobee Road that left one officer injured and a suspect in custody.

According to a statement issued by the Fort Pierce Police Department (FFPD), officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 9 p.m. on August 30 reporting a man walking through the store with a machete. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as shoppers fled in panic.

Officers quickly located the suspect — identified as 33-year-old Lawrence Fountain — near the store's exit, pushing a shopping cart with the machete placed in its upper compartment, according to the news release.

Bodycam video shows that when officers approached, Fountain grabbed the weapon and swung it violently at an officer, striking him in the forearm.

Police said its officer managed to redirect the attack and force Fountain to the ground, disarming him in the process. After a brief struggle, Fountain was taken into custody.

Fountain sustained minor injuries and was treated before being booked into the St. Lucie County Jail, while the injured officer was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. Police say his quick response prevented further harm to shoppers and staff.

Fountain faces aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, disturbing the peace, and petit theft, according to the FPPD.

The investigation into Saturday’s machete attack remains active.
