As the monsoon continues to wreak havoc across North India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. In particular, heavy rains have triggered widespread flooding in Punjab—the worst in decades—which has claimed at least 29 lives so far. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to discuss the flood situation. Meanwhile, Delhi has also been put on flood alert as the water level of the Yamuna River crossed the danger mark and continues to rise. Incessant rainfall has caused waterlogging and traffic jams across India's capital. IMD has predicted that the country is likely to see above-normal rainfall in September.
