December 1944, Italy. Surrounded by Germans, Lt. John Fox — an African American officer — called artillery fire on his own position, stopping the enemy and saving hundreds of Americans. He died with the foe that day, but his heroism was buried by racism. Only in 1997 did President Bill Clinton award him the Medal of Honor. A sacrifice America took fifty years to honor.
