Jonathan Berman, a documentary filmmaker whose work has repeatedly captured unusual subcultures and critical moments in American life. Jonathan’s film Commune is being re-released for its 20th anniversary with a brand-new restoration.

Commune explores the true story of Black Bear Ranch, a 1968 experiment in radical community living funded by The Doors, The Monkees, and Frank Zappa. The ranch’s “Free Land for Free People” motto drew a mix of utopians, seekers, and rebels who tried to reinvent the way humans live together. Through candid interviews with real residents, including actor/activist Peter Coyote, Jonathan’s film uncovers the messy realities and deep hopes inside communal living: free love, experimentations with parenting, and conflicts that tested the limits of the human spirit. With America again facing polarized politics and rising loneliness, Jonathan’s take on what drew people to Black Bear Ranch and why co-housing conversations are resurging feels more urgent than ever.
