Elagin Island: Former Residence of the Russian Tsars and Prime Minister Peter Stolypin

Today we are going to visit one of St. Petersburg’s most fascinating places. This is Yelagin Island, which is located in the delta of the Neva River.

This island received its name in honor of the chief chamberlain of the imperial court, Ivan Elagin, who bought this island from Grigory Potemkin, a favorite of Empress Catherine II. Later, Emperor Alexander first bought the island for his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna.

After the death of Maria Feodorovna Elagin palace gradually turned into one of the many royal residences, which emperors visited rarely. At the beginning of the 20th century, Yelagin Palace became the summer residence of the Prime Minister Peter Stolypin.

After the serious attacks, Prime Minister Peter Stolypin needed round-the-clock enhanced security, and the isolation of Yelagin Island allowed for all the security conditions.

Peter Stolypin was one of the famous reformers of Russia and the first public politician in Russia. He understood the backwardness of Russia and applied harsh measures to stabilize the situation inside the country.

The Russian empire was already coming apart at the seams. And Peter Stolypin’s life, with constant attempts on his life, was becoming like a nightmare.

Yelagin Island, detached by the police, was truly a place of paradise for Pyotr Stolypin, where he and his family members could somehow relax and not be afraid of attempts on their lives.

Here Pyotr Stolypin and his family spent several of their happy years until, in 1917, he was murdered in the Kiev City Theatre.
