A Christian's Guide to Relationships
Romans 12:14–21 provides a series of exhortations that guide the believer’s conduct in relationships, especially toward those who may be hostile. Paul urges Christians to bless rather than curse persecutors (v. 14), to empathize with others in their joys and sorrows (v. 15), and to live in humility and harmony without arrogance (v. 16). He calls for peaceable living where possible (v. 18), refusing to repay evil with evil but instead leaving room for God’s justice (vv. 17, 19). Paul even encourages overcoming hostility by acts of kindness, such as feeding one’s enemy (v. 20; cf. Prov 25:21–22). The closing admonition summarizes the section: believers are not to be overcome by evil but to overcome evil with good (v. 21). In short, this passage portrays the Christian ethic of love in action, demonstrating Christlike humility, peace, and goodness even in the face of opposition. It reflects trust in God’s justice and power, while calling the believer to be a vessel of grace in all relationships.
