'TVA would not be tearing it down just because' What's next for Hartsville cooling tower site?

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) plans to implode one of Middle Tennessee’s most recognizable landmarks next month, the 500-foot-tall cooling tower in Hartsville.

But as the countdown begins, questions are flourishing about what’s next for the long-abandoned site that's become a fixture for nearly five decades.

The cooling tower, a relic of a never-finished nuclear plant project from the 1970s, has loomed over Trousdale County since. The site was never active after TVA scrapped plans for the nuclear facility due to cost overruns in the early 1980s. Many were left unemployed, as the swell of workers building a would-be plant quickly left Hartsville.

"It had a ghost town feel to it for a while," said Hartsville Mayor Jack McCall.

But the tower is still there, a pseudo-pillar that residents consider... memorable, quirky, mysterious, a beloved landmark, an eyesore, or perhaps all of the above.

“It’s a part of the history, but I’m not sure it’s part of the good history,” said Jerry “Cheese” Richmond, a lifelong Hartsville resident and radio personality.

“To me, it is definitely a landmark,” added Susan Burton, who has lived directly across from the tower for most of her life. “I don’t know anything different. It’s always been here.”

Burton said her father worked on the tower during its construction. For her and others, the concrete giant is a permanent fixture in their everyday lives and in the landscape.
