The 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin marked the largest gathering in the group’s history, bringing together more than 20 leaders from the Global South. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping headlined the high-stakes meeting, which came amid escalating U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Leaders adopted a joint declaration rejecting unilateral coercive measures and emphasised cooperation on security and economic resilience. Modi’s first visit to China in seven years signalled a thaw in India–China ties, while Egypt’s participation underscored Africa’s growing voice in the SCO.
