Insights:
The name Michael means “Who is like God?” Michael remains the only angel called archangel in scripture (Jude 9; cf. Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1). Daniel prophecy that Michael, the great prince” function as a “guard” over the people of Israel (Daniel 12:1). John’s revelation provides details of the protective activity during the “time of distress such as never occurred” (Revelation 12:7; Daniel 12:1). The period reference is the beginning of the great tribulation. Michael and his angels make war with the dragon and his angels. Angelic beings over power the dragon— “they (dragon and his angels) were not strong enough” (Revelation12:8). Although the battle has a cosmic scene the implication appears on earth as “the great dragon was thrown down” to earth (Revelation 12:9). The bible denotes several spiritual judgments against Satan:

1. cast out of original position in heaven (Ezekiel 28:16)
2. judgment pronounced by God in Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:14–15)
3. judgment at the Cross of Christ (John 12:31)
4. cast to the earth in the middle of tribulation (Revelation 12:13)
5. incarcerated in the Abyss at the beginning of the Millennium (Revelation 20:2)
6. cast into the lake of fire forever at the end of the Millennium (Revelation 20:10).
These spiritual judgments are reminders of the scope of Satan’s influence. Like signpost on American highways, the judgments point to the destination of the original rebel.
