Made of pure nickel: interstellar alien shows more and more anomalies

All the observatories of the world are studying the interstellar messenger coded 3I/ATLAS all night long, trying first of all to establish the chemical composition of this, as it is believed, comet, which arrived to us from the constellation Sagittarius. Data obtained by the Webb space telescope and the Very Large Telescope on Earth (it is located in Chile) indicate that we have encountered something really strange.

3I/ATLAS will be close to the Sun only by the end of the year, now it is located further than the orbit of Mars. It is still dark and cold there, there is little sunlight, nevertheless, the "comet" is actively evaporating, throwing out about 40 kilograms of water ice per second. Which is already very, very strange: our comets at such a distance are still "sleeping".

The Webb telescope used a spectroscope to delve into the chemical composition of what the "comet" was losing, and the results were even more surprising .

It turned out that along with water, the "comet" emits colossal (for such a distance) volumes of carbon dioxide. Journalists have already called the comet "carbonated", because water and carbon dioxide are what soda is. But in the terrestrial drink, water is the main thing, and gas bubbles float in it. But here, on the contrary, there is more carbon dioxide than water, rather droplets of water in the gas.

However, drinking such a thirst-quenching composition is strongly discouraged: the Webb telescope also detected significant impurities of carbon monoxide and carbon disulfide.

The strangest thing is the ratio of carbon dioxide to water, eight times more gas than ash-two-o. This is radically different from what we see in "our" comets (water predominates there, and the ones that are really carbonated are our own, home-made comets). In the entire history of astronomy, such an anomaly has been observed only in one comet that we consider ours (C/2016R2), but how do we know whether it is actually ours, or whether it also flew in from somewhere at some point.

The study's authors (led by Martin Cordiner of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center) noted that the nucleus of "comet" 3I/ATLAS appeared to be surrounded not just by water vapor, but by ice as well. They suggested that 3I/ATLAS formed far from its star, at the so-called "snow line," where carbon dioxide turns from gas to ice.

Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin agrees: the stellar "comet" is not at all like ours, which raises the question of whether all planetary systems are formed in the same way:

- We have not seen anything like this before. The question remains open whether such a chemical composition is standard for comets of the planetary system from which this comet came, which may indicate a completely different path of its formation, or whether the comet acquired this composition as a result of its wanderings over several billion years? - he wrote on his blog.

ALIEN SHIP: NEW EVIDENCE
Meanwhile, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who believes that we are dealing with an alien ship and not a comet at all, has drawn attention to data from the ground-based Very Large Telescope, which shows the situation from a completely different side – but this side is also full of anomalies .

In the remote analyses that the telescope took from the "comet", there is a huge amount of nickel, but no iron. This is nonsense for the solar system: for example, meteorites falling to Earth consist of both metals.

"Nickel without iron is a signature of industrial production of nickel alloys. This data is a new 3I/ATLAS anomaly. In natural comets, iron and nickel are usually present together, since both elements are formed together in supernova explosions," he wrote in his blog .

Astronomers observing with the Very Large Telescope have proposed a model, a mechanism, to explain where the iron went, but Loeb considers it "exotic" and unrealizable in nature. What we see resembles industrial pure nickel and nothing else! The Comet is losing it at a rate of 5 grams per second - just as a ship approaching the Sun at enormous speed should lose pieces of its skin.

Loeb also analyzes the Webb telescope data we discussed above and wonders why the particles of matter evaporating so abundantly from the "comet" do not create a tail: is this not protection from the sun's heat? Protection created artificially.

“I would be happy if 3I/ATLAS turned out to be a CO2-rich comet, which would mean that humanity is not in danger from alien technology, but on the other hand, humanity desperately needs a push to wake up and avoid self-destruction,” the Harvard astronomer sums up.

So 3I/ATLAS is quickly becoming an interstellar mystery, perhaps the most burning one in 21st-century science. Whether it turns out to be a comet or an interstellar spacecraft, we are still dealing with something we don't understand.
