India’s electronics manufacturing has jumped 6x in the last 11 years, reaching ₹11.5 lakh crore. We have also become the world’s 2nd largest mobile manufacturer. But for something as small as tempered glass, we were still fully dependent on imports…

Now a step has been taken towards self-reliance in this area… In August 2025, India’s first tempered glass manufacturing unit started in Noida. In Phase 1, this unit will produce 25 million tempered glass sheets every year and create 600 jobs. In Phase 2, the capacity is expected to rise to 200 million units per year with 4,500 jobs.

But the bigger challenge is—
Making a fighter jet engine is one of the most advanced technologies in the world. Today this expertise and capability exists only with the US, Russia, France, the UK, and China. India did develop its indigenous fighter jet Tejas, but for its engine we have still remained dependent on other countries.

And now the game is changing—
Just a few days before this tempered glass factory began, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced that India, in collaboration with France’s Safran, will build a 120 KiloNewton engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This project will focus on 100% technology transfer and Made in India production.

Until now, building fighter jet engines on our own has been difficult for the country due to many factors, including budget constraints. But if this tie-up with Safran is successful, it will be a big step towards India’s self-reliance.

For now, the launch of India’s first tempered glass manufacturing unit is also a major milestone, since the country’s tempered glass market is worth over ₹20,000 crore.
