As of July 2025, President Donald Trump has issued an executive order aimed at making it easier to involuntarily commit individuals with serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders, framing it as part of a bid to end homelessness. This policy expands on comments made during his 2024 campaign, in which he called for the return of mental institutions to get people off the streets
