This interview originally aired on September 4, 2023, on the summit: Mama Bear Family Care: 42 Inspired Steps to Create Dynamic Eco-Friendly Living for Your Family.

I will be releasing one interview per month from previous summits as part of “Season 2” of the “New View, New Life” podcast.

“It is crucial, in the face of oppression, trauma, and suffering, that we reclaim our joy, because that is how we reclaim our power and our humanity.”
~Tanmeet Sethi, MD

If you’ve ever felt like there was nothing left to fight for, this inspiring interview is for you. Tanmeet Sethi, a board-certified Integrative Family Medicine physician and activist, was expecting her third child when she received devastating news about her second.

Tanmeet is a warrior who has dedicated her life to serving the most vulnerable and oppressed. When faced with a situation no amount of fighting could change, she chose gratitude and Joy to transform her experience—and the lives of her family.

She discovered that grief and Joy can coexist, “because Joy is meaning, connection, belonging, love.” In this conversation, we explore what Joy truly is, and what wellness, thriving, and resilience really mean. We discuss how to increase our capacity to thrive—even in the face of pain and struggle.

Tanmeet also shares how loving yourself is a bold act of justice. From her physician’s perspective, this practice calms the brain’s “threat” centers and activates executive functions that give motivation, clarity, and the ability to create meaningful change—both in yourself and the world.

One of my favorite messages from Tanmeet: we can choose to live only in tragedy, or we can ask, “Is there a bigger story here?” Her bigger story shows that claiming Joy, even in hardship, teaches us how to live fully and beautifully. I’d love to hear your favorite takeaway—leave a comment to share!
